Uniforms

I wonder about uniforms.  Not military or workplace dress but the uniforms that we all wear to identify us as us. I mean how do I know what a person is about or likes or their experiences.  I think that I have worn several uniforms to let those around me know about me.  During my working life I wore suits.  Not just any style of suit but one that reflected my experiences and said something to a group of people who had made many of the same choices in their life that I had made in mine.   We probably didn't know each other and maybe if we did we might  not have liked each other but we could recognize each other by our uniforms immediately.

So I wonder who started the uniform that we wore?  I wonder why we choose to wear it?  Did we need to fit a mold to become successful and the uniform was part of it.  After wondering about it for years I finally concluded that it really wasn't important.  I think that maybe we continue to wear the uniform of our "class" that changes as we pass through the different phases of our time.  I used to want to rebel about wearing them now I find myself taking comfort in watching other generations wearing theirs and I am happy to have discovered that life keeps moving and allowing subtle Darwinian changes in each generations uniforms.  Like the Oak Ridge Boys said "Its just an ordinary story about the way things are."
